After amassing legions of fans from his TV Show Gavin & Stacey, James Corden made the jump to American television in 2015. He took over from Craig Ferguson hosting The Late Late Show on CBS in March of that year, collecting even more followers in the process.
But none of that could have prepared him for the unbelievable success that was Carpool Karaoke. This segment of his late-night talk show features the host driving through Los Angeles, accompanied by a famous musical guest. Inspired by a charity sketch he performed with George Michael in 2011, the hit success came from a simple idea.
As Corden drives, the celebrity sings along with him to some of their famous hits. “We just had this idea: Los Angeles, traffic, the carpool lane – maybe this is something we could pull off,” the talk show host said.
Carpool Karoake was a monumental success, featuring artists such as Britney Spears, One Direction and Stevie Wonder. A video featuring singer Adele made it to 136 million views, making it YouTube’s biggest viral video of 2016.
But one thing fans of the show have been clamouring for since the segment first aired in 2015 has been the addition of one particular record-setting musician: Ed Sheeran. However, finally the wait is over, and we get to watch the full 13-minute video of the songwriter’s appearance on the show.
Following up from Harry Styles and Katy Perry in May, the segment was posted online today and has already amassed over a million views. The video begins in strong form, as the duo sing Sheeran’s hit song Shape of You – from his latest album Divide – and fit in numerous more before the segment’s end.
Sheeran also gives some details about his personal life, including the reason why he has gotten rid of his phone. “I’d wake up every morning and there’d be like 50 messages, and none of them would say ‘hey how are you’” he told the talk show host. “It’d be like ‘can I have this, can you lend me this, can you do this, can I get this’, and it was fine at the beginning and it just got really, really draining by the end of it.”
On the brighter side of things, he revealed an unusual party trick. “There is a snack in Britain called Malteasers,” Corden explained, “I heard you can fit 47 in your mouth.” Not one to turn down a challenge, the singer ended up fitting to fit an impressive number…
The singer-songwriter’s latest album was released in March this year. He broke records by becoming the first artist to have two songs debut in the US top 10 in the same week. He is currently on his third world tour, with an astonishing 130 shows planned in total.
If you aren’t impressed enough with the singer’s talents, from record-breaking songs to Malteaser challenges, you should check out the time he proved you can play every pop song ever made with four chords.
